| Birthday Wrap-up |
[Nov. 29th, 2009|09:55 pm] |
Last week, Ray gave me the first part of my birthday present: a new digital camera (a pink Sony Cyber Shot). All week, Ray had said he had a surprise for my birthday. All he would tell me was that he needed to rent a car and that I didn't need to pack an overnight bag. Friday, Ray rented a car and we were going to go out for dinner. We couldn't decide where to go so Ray said "Let's just drive until we find somewhere." That was cool with me.
We went up Brimley to Finch, then across Finch (at this point I'm guessing we're going to go to Korean Grill at Midland and Finch. We sail past Midland... okay, not Korean Grill. Then we go north on Kennedy and I think "Okay, Mongolian Grill"... but we drove right past Kennedy and Steeles... up to Hwy 7, so I'm figuring Dave and Buster's. Then Ray turned onto the 404, heading north. Then we got off at Wellington, drove through Aurora (at this point I'm totally confused as to where we're going, but Ray said "you like car rides, you've done this all your life since you were a kid" and I agreed. I really was enjoying the drive.) Then we went over to the 400 and headed north. Ray turned off at Hwy 9 and we drove all the way to Orangeville. We pulled into Angel's Diner (one of my favourite restos in Orangeville), but they were just about to close. :( Ray's plan all along was to have dinner at Angel's, but that didn't work out. So we went to Boston Pizza for dinner. After dinner, we went to Timmie's in Orangeville to get a coffee for Ray and a tea for me for the ride home. As we leave the Timmie's, Ray turns left (north) and I said "since we're this far we may as well go see my mom." Ray looks at me and says: "I guess I can't hide it anymore... that's where we're going."
I started to tear up, I was so happy. I had thought about asking Ray if we could go to Mom's for my birthday, but didn't want to ruin whatever he had planned for me. Turned out I didn't have to. Ray had been planning this for my birthday for about two months.
We got up to Mom's at about 11 pm, sat visiting with her for a while, then went to bed. Mom had left Rockets candies on our pillows, instead of mints. :D I woke up in the morning and looked out the window to see all the new alpacas!!!! Mom has 16 alpacas now. (She had 5 pet-stock alpacas up until about a week ago...) She has two separate barns for them now -- need to keep the males and females separated until they breed, of course. Ray got caught in the cross fire of a fight between the girls and got spat on. :( But he had a shower and got his coat washed before we went home, so it was all good.
Mom and I made a yummy mushroom bread for a snack, and Mom made a lasagna for dinner. Hmmm, lasagna on my birthday? Where have I heard that before? ;) (Ray made me lasagna for my 17th birthday, aka the day he proposed)
We drove home and had dinner at Mandarin with Ray's parents (who had never been there before!!! How strange.)
All in all, it was a great birthday!

| Life is good |
[Nov. 25th, 2009|12:10 pm] |
I just realized that my life is really good right now, and seems like it will stay that way.
My biggest worry is about having another kid, and that's not a bad thing, I just know it's going to be a bit stressful for awhile.
The things that I end up complaining about (even just in my head) are things that are getting better, and I'm really just complaining that they're not getting better fast enough.
For the longest time I could see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it seemed almost like a mirage, as I would never get there.
Now I've gone through and the outside is rather nice. |

I came across a review of New Moon by the Vatican thanks to Kevin Smith:
http://www.examiner.com/x-704-Pop-Media-Examiner~y2009m11d20-The-Twilight-Saga-New-Moon-reviews-are-in-from-the-Vatican-to-the-critics--opinions-aplenty
"Even the Vatican has an opinion. Monsignor Franco Perazzolo, the Vatican's culture council leader released a statement saying of 'New Moon': "This theme of vampires in Twilight combines a mixture of excesses that, as ever is aimed at young people and gives a heavy esoteric element." He adds, "This film is nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message and as such should be of concern."
Now, this should have the internal conflict level rise on many people... if you hate Twilight, but you also dislike religion, doesn't that mean that Twilight is good because you don't like religion?
Yes, the paradox is rising in many of you as I type this.
Even the Vatican doesn't like Sparkly vampires apparently, but that would mean that the Vatican is saying something that you agree with, and that can't possibly be right... can it?
Having said that, cleaners have been dispatched to your location to clean up the area where your computer is because your heads might explode.

| School Woes |
[Nov. 20th, 2009|07:58 am] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | tired | ] | I talked to my advisor yesterday, and assuming I get into all these classes when my sign-up time opens at 11:30am today, this should be my winter semester:
CMNS 155 ON1 'Introduction to Workplace & Academic Communications'
MATH 105 'Math for Elementary Teachers'
EDUC 300 'Introduction to Best Practices in Teaching'
EDUC 362 'Philosophy of Education'
ENGL 225 'Classical Literature in Translation'
ENGL 310 'Elizabethan and Jacobean Drama'
Plus finishing grade 11 advanced math (I did grade 11 general, not good enough) in my Tuesday/Thursday morning upgrade class, which has been going very well so far with over 90% average in all the chapter tests. I HAVE to have a grade 11 advanced credit for the math 105, but I'm going to try to talk the teacher into letting me take the class anyway on the promise that I'll finish grade eleven before I finish math 105.
It is going to be a LOT of work. I really wish they'd just bloody run English 210, it's a writing requirement that would also fulfil my last English second-year requirement, but they haven't run it since maybe last year. >:( I tried to take it last semester but it wasn't running then either, so instead I have to do my writing requirement (the communications course), AND one more second-year English (English 225, at least it's with a teacher I know). Grr argh.
The two Education classes satisfy my last upper-level breadth requirements and they are prerequisites for UFV's teaching program, as is the Math course which also fills in my last couple lower-level credit requirements. One last upper-level English from the appropriate section, and that's it. Hopefully.
The problems are: I still need to get my courses from the University of Ottawa properly 'articulated' into their synonymous credits at the University of the Fraser Valley. I was told when I originally applied that they wouldn't need any syllabuses because UoO was a big school and certainly my courses had already been articulated before. That person lied. :( So I have to hassle UoO in the morning to send the 2002/2003 syllabuses for my English, Psychology, and Philosophy courses post-haste. IF the credits transfer the way we think/hope they will, this winter will be my final semester. If not, I'll need to do summer courses at the least (tricky with the wedding in August), or do one last semester next fall.
The OTHER thing is, UFV's teaching program starts in JULY! And not just a part-time or short-run thing, it starts full-bore full-time on theory in July so they can drop you right into a teaching practicum in September. With the wedding in August, that's just not going to happen. BUT apparently Simon Fraser University starts their teaching program right in September, by skipping a lot of theory (which I'm hopefully getting in the Education courses I've been taking as breadth requirements) and dropping you right into practicum. and the University of British Columbia has a teaching program that starts in January, but my advisor wasn't familiar with that one to tell me whether they start you with theory before teaching. January would give me kind of a convenient post-degree-post-wedding cooldown period, but I have no idea what I'd do for work. Or whether I want to drive to Vancouver every day. I have done the requirements for all three programs, I made a point of it so as to keep my options completely open.
Rargh. For the time being I'm signing up for the above. Paul's going to be done school and has assured me that he's willing to pick up the ball at home to give me maximum time for schoolwork. Really, I did three courses while working, even while managing the Santa set, and looking after the house, now I'm going five while doing everything around the house, can I do what will technically be seven courses, if I don't have to worry about things at home and am willing to give up any semblance of a social life? |
